Haveil Havalim #78 YAWP!

Welcome to A Barbaric Yawp. This is where I blog. Hear me roar. YAWP!!!!!!

Now I ask you to join me on a tour of the Jewish/Israel blogosphere.

There is a lot of activity in the JBlogosphere and thanks to the interference of some of the less civil barbarian tribes I have been offline many times this week.

Please note that it is likely and possible that I will update this more than once after it goes live.

The JBlogosphere has a post called Live-Blogging that I am cutting and pasting into this:

As the war around Israel rages… here is a list of many of the Israeli and other J-bloggers who are “live-blogging” the war, in alphabetical order (some are bigger on updates, some on commentary, so be sure to look at a number of them)…

Please e-mail serandez at verizon dot net or any of the other members of this blog with other blogs that are live-blogging. Thank you. We will try to update as we are able.

  8. Richard Silverstein Says:

Some people think that rocket attacks are inconsequential.

Thanks for the link…I think. But as usual with these types of uber pro-Israel sites you mischaracterize my views.

First, that post was written about Qassam rockets hitting southern Israel and not about the current rocket attacks. Hamas Qassams are notoriously inaccurate & have caused but a few fatalities & injuries in the past few years. Not that they are “inconseuqential” to use yr term. They are terribly frightening & unnerving.

In the case of Hezbollah’s Katyusha rockets, they are much more dangerous obviously given the news yesterday. And I grieve for every Israeli killed or wounded by them. I also condemn Hezbollah for its guerilla attack against the IDF. However, unlike you I imagine, I place the violence on both sides within a context. This does not enable me to see this conflict in the black & white way that you do.

We must try to be reasonable (a hard thing to be these days) & look at the sheer overwhelming firepower that the IDF brings to bear on the Palestinians & Lebanese. It is vastly superior to whatever Hamas can muster & even what Hezbollah can muster. In the post you link to I was comparing the lethality of Palestinian vs. Israeli weaponry & found Israel’s arsenal much more dangerous than Hamas’.

You & yr readers may still disagree w. me but I’d appreciate anyone who does so to do me the favor of accurately characterizing my argument.

And wouldn’t it be more timely to link to a more recent post than this, say one that actually comments on the Lebanon mess (see attached link)?

  9. Ozymandias Says:

    Richard,

I began gathering posts for this carnival last week and continued through today so there is an evolution of posts here.

You may feel like you are being mischaracterized just as others may feel that you fail to give the situation the attention and seriousness it requires. You ask for a reasonable discourse and I ask the same thing.

That means that I am not going to sit back and say that Israel needs to sit on its ass because it has superior firepower. Sometimes the most reasonable use of superior force is to use it to force the other side to acknowledge that they cannot win and in turn save lives that might have been lost down the road in needless acts of violence.

You may think that you operate from a position of logic and reason but from where I sit all I see is some guy pointing fingers and offering ideas that have proven to be morally bankrupt as well as useless.

Your heart is in the right place but your solutions are proven failures.

    Yawp!
